It’s stein time at WEST

If your plans for the weekend look like this – sofa – fridge – sofa – then today’s 5pm Dining blog is just what you need to break the cycle of dependency between you and your soft furnishings.

In Lasswade, just outside Edinburgh. The Paper Mill is holding a three day beer festival. £10 gets you a Craft Collection glass and five beer tokens.

They have an astounding array of beers on offer including some surprises from Stewart Brewing and a new range of craft beers from Belhaven.

Since opening in July 2012, the privately owned Paper Mill has picked up Best Bar at the Dram Awards 2013 and Best Place for a Pint in Midlothian at The Midlothian Food & Drink Awards as well as being awarded an AA Rosette for its food quality.

Dust off the dirndl

Sticking with the beer theme but moving across the M8, tonight is the first night of WEST’s Oktoberfest.

Music, food and, of course, lots of lovely beer are on offer at the Glasgow Green brewery every Friday night in October.

The bar is providing a brand new menu, band and a chance to taste the entire WEST range, from the crisp St. Mungo lager to the dark and rich Dunkel, along with their famous Oktoberfestbier.

The Bavarian nosh on offer includes goulash soup, wienerschnitzel, semmelknödel (bread dumplings); currywurst; pretzel roll; and reibekuchen (potato fritters). Vegetarian options are also available.

The Brasswurst Bavarian Beer Band, will be on hand to play everything from traditional polkas to modern pop tunes with an oompah twist.

Booking in advance might be wise.

Take your tastes buds to the lab

Staying in Glasgow but looking forward to next Tuesday, Auchentoshan whisky are running a taste experiment lab at The Corinthian Club from 6.30pm.

Guided by advice from Rachel Barrie, the Auchentoshan Master Blender and chemist, the evening will be hosted by coffee and taste experts Dunne Frankowski and cocktail guru Ryan Chetiyawardana.

Having studied in Glasgow, before stints in Edinburgh’s Bramble bar, Ryan is currently storming London with his just launched White Lyan bar.

The Taste Experiments is a masterclass in how to understand your personal taste profile through whisky and cocktails.

Guests will learn about aroma, taste and perception in order to help them to appreciate single malts and customise cocktails to their own palate.

Tix are a tenner per skull from here.
