Pearls, whisky and oysters will make the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s birthday go with a bang

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is 30 years old this year and they are holding a whole programme of special events to mark the occasion.

The Society’s 30th or pearl anniversary coincides with the UK’s native oyster season getting into full swing. To celebrate these two auspicious events, the whisky club is opening its doors to non-members this October, and celebrating with expertly matched whisky and oyster pairings.

There is a school of thought that says that spirits and oysters shouldn’t mix. After extensive research, the 5pm Dining blog can categorically state that this is nonsense. Or at least I’ve been fine every time that I’ve combined the two.

Debunk the myth

The Society’s two venues in Edinburgh, 28 Queen Street in the New Town and The Vaults, Leith, will be doing their bit to debunk the myth from this evening. From tonight until Sunday 3rd November, visitors, including non-members, will be able to sample platters of three oysters carefully paired with three of the Society’s rare single cask, single malt whiskies for £12 per platter.

Pearl masterclass

Taking the pearl theme quite a bit further, the Society will also be hosting a special pearl masterclass event and dinner at The Vaults on Friday 25th October.

The pearl masterclass will be hosted by Bettina Boerner, a pearl expert from London, who will be flying into Edinburgh to dive deep into the world of pearls.

Pearl jewellery

The evening will include a tasting of three matched whisky and oyster pairings, plus a three-course dinner and the chance to win a unique piece of pearl jewellery created by Bettina Boerner worth more than £700.

Tickets for this event cost£ 89 for non members and are available here.
