Japanese food is the draw at Yummy Tori

Yummy Tori, the Japanese restaurant on Edinburgh’s Lothian Road, has a fun event taking place this coming Friday. To launch their new wine list, they have created an eight course tasting menu. Each course is matched a different wine, sake or cocktail.

You can see the full menu, along with paired drinks, here. If you are not familiar with Japanese food (we’re claiming no expertise beyond a fondness for sushi) then it’s mind boggling to think what drink you might pair with a dish of cabbage and miso sauce or belly pork yakitori with miso aubergine.

Japanese pancakes

Even trickier is what wine to match with shiitake and tofu gyoza plus okinomiyaki. We know that shiitake and tofu gyoza are fried dumpling stuffed with fungi and tofu but, until we Googled it, we thought that okinomiyaki may have been a manga character rather than a type of Japanese pancake.

Wasabi prawns

The 5pm Dining blog is also intrigued as to how a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc will stand up to wasabi prawns. All in all, it looks like being a great night for the epicurious.

With six wines, a cocktail on arrival and sake to end the meal, it promises to be quite an evening and it’s perhaps just as well that it doesn’t take place on a school night.

The cost is £35 per head for tasting menu, cocktail on arrival and wine throughout the meal. Bookings can be made from 7pm onwards. You can make a reservation from here.
