Get your ho ho ho on

The 5pm Dining blog is already knee-deep in tinsel; fairy light testing is underway and we have a turkey with our name on it.

We are not alone. In Edinburgh, the Christmas markets have just launched. On The Mound, the European market promises crafts, art, gift shops and what their marketing literature refers to as ‘gastronomic surprises’. Traditional and modern Scottish gifts, foods and drinks will be on offer at The Scottish Market in St Andrews Square and, new for this year, there is also a Children’s Market in town.

Light Night

While the markets open today, the Christmas light switch on takes place on Sunday. Kicking off from 2.30pm on George Street, Light Night promises 850 performers across several stages celebrating the twelve days of Christmas.  The night climaxes with the city’s Christmas lights being switched on and, this year, six-time Olympian Sir Chris Hoy will be doing the honours.  The night will end with a spectacular fireworks display to kick off the festive season.

Glasgow Loves Christmas

Glasgow’s Christmas is also in full flow. From tomorrow, Glasgow on Ice will be getting its skate on in George Square. Saturday is also the starting point for the George Square events programme. Traditional choirs, Santa story times, pantomimes, puppet shows and dance events are just a few of the activities on offer.

Of course, Glasgow Christmas Market is already up and running in St Enoch Square.

City centre dining with 5pm

All this wassailing is hungry work and, as always, 5pm Dining has lots of great restaurant offers in both Glasgow and Edinburgh city centres. Whether you are looking for a mid-shopping trip lunch; a pre-panto meal or a slap-up Christmas night out then you can browse our restaurants from here.

Don’t forget that our daily Big Deals provide brilliant dining offers while our Christmas gift page is ideal for anyone stuck for a present for a food-loving friend.
