Urban Bar and Brasserie is a handsome spot.

Monday morning… Feeling bright-eyed and bushy tailed?

No?

Well, the 5pm Dining blog has some tasty news to pep up your appetite. Urban Bar and Brasserie on Glasgow’s St Vincent Place has just launched its new seasonal menu and, to use a technical term, it’s a humdinger.

You can see the full thing in all its glory here on Urban Brasserie’s 5pm entry.

Classic dishes

It is a good looking menu which combines classic European dishes like the chicken liver parfait starter with more far flung options like the fillets of bream steamed in paper with tiger prawns, chilli and citrus oil plus sticky rice.

Dishes which this scribbler has on his to-scoff list include the house fish soup with ginger, prawn dumplings and coriander – there is nothing like some zingy Asian flavours to kick start a good meal.

I also liked the look of the char grilled venison haunch steak which is served with a celeriac gratin and a red currant and red wine jus. If you ever wondered what the phrase ‘winter warmer’ would look like on a plate, there is your answer.

Comfort food

The menu also does a nice line in comfort food. Urban fish goujons with tartar sauce and chips is always a winner as is the chef’s Scotch beefburger with mature cheddar, cucumber relish and chips.

It helps that Urban has a handsome dining room and smartly turned out staff. Eating here always feels like a treat and the warm glow of conviviality which good food produces is amplified by the weather outside turning nasty.

So, happy Monday.
