Samosas are among the delicacies on offer at Bindi

Yesterday, the 5pm Dining blog had a chat with Ian Pirrie, the man who runs Edinburgh School of Food and Wine.

Ian was in fine form as the ESFW had just been named as the best Scottish Cookery School at the British Cookery School Awards. No small feat as the ESFW is an independent school that doesn’t have the financial backing enjoyed by many of its competitors. You can see their 2014 calendar of courses, cookery days and dinners here.

Gujarati cuisine

Ian was singing the praises of Bindi, a recently opened Indian restaurant on St Patrick Square in Edinburgh. It’s a veggie joint which sits in the premises long occupied by Ann Purna. The owner and chef is Bindiya Kanani who draws on her background to produce a menu packed with Gujarati and East African dishes.

Bombay chip butty

The blog has very little knowledge of Gujarati or East African food but we would happily get stuck in about a plateful of chilli cheese toast or vadha pau – Bombay’s take on the chip butty.

Gaby Soutar reviewed Bindi in Saturday’s Scotsman mag and thoroughly enjoyed her meal.

Bindiya has taught several Indian cookery courses at the ESFW and she will be running cookery courses at the new restaurant. Perfect if you ever fancied making your own dhokra, handwo or imli mogo fries.
