The Inkie Blinkie: back in black

The weekend is almost here and, if you are looking for an excuse to have a drink or two in Edinburgh, then Juniper has just launched a new cocktail menu.

Twinned with the Twenty Princes Street restaurant, Juniper enjoys great views over central Edinburgh including the glitz and glam of the Winter Festival. It’s a great backdrop for some rather twisty cocktails.

Smoky bacon

Squid ink, smoky bacon foam and blow-torched toast are among the more outré ingredients involved. I tried the Inkie Blinkie which mixed Don Julio tequila, agave syrup, lime juice and the aforementioned squid ink.

Jet black in colour, it was bracingly savoury and I think I preferred the rich, sweetness of the Make’r Mine A Flip, a mix of Maker’s Mark bourbon, Coca Cola reduction, Aztec chocolate bitters and a whole egg.

As a fun quirk, they’ve named sections of the cocktail menu after Edinburgh districts so you can choose to drink Old Town style, New Town style or you could throw in a Little Bit of West End.

Spot the spoot

Pleasantly giddy after a couple of cocktails, we nipped next door to Twenty Princes Street. If you enjoy delving around in crustacean carapaces then you will love the seafood platter. We shared one as a starter and feasted on lobster, razor clams, mussels and langoustines.

Cocktails and seafood – there’s a good weekend right there.
