Beer and Skittles: lots of beer, less skittles.

A couple of weeks back, the 5pm Dining blog mentioned the launch of Beer & Skittles on Edinburgh’s Picardy Place.

Since then, we’ve got our paws on some more information. As we noted a fortnight ago, one of the major selling points of the new basement bar venture was the wide range of bottled beers.

Global beer selection

As well as nine draught beers, the bar stocks over 60 bottled varieties from around the world. Dedicated beer hounds may be familiar with most of them but the list still had a few surprises for me.

Finnish Lapin Kulta, French Bellerose and Crocodile from Sweden are all new to me on the bottled beer front. I also hadn’t come across Germany’s Stiegl or Italy’s Menebrea among the taps.

Hall of Foam

Intrepid drinkers who make their way through the entire range, not in one day obviously, are entered into the bar’s Hall of Foam.

The food menu consists of beer bites such as crunchy mussels, crispy ox tongue with piccalilli, haggis fritters and triple-cooked chips.

A selection of beer cocktails are also available. This scribbler prefers the list of matched beers and spirits. Appleton rum and Red Stripe or a shot of Stoli and a bottle of Baltika No.7 get my vote.

Naturally, big sporting events like the Six Nations, F1 and assorted football leagues are extensively covered on the screens at Beer & Skittles.
