The dancing can get pretty energetic at Boteco do Brazil in Edinburgh

Edinburgh and Mardi Gras may not seem like likely bedfellows. It seems the sort of decadent celebration best enjoyed in the sultry heat of Rio de Janeiro or on the louche streets of New Orleans.

However, the party people at Edinburgh’s Boteco do Brasil are having no truck with such a glum attitude.

Carnival

This Saturday, they are getting into the swing of things with a kick-ass carnival party which gets underway at 10pm and aims to keep rocking until 3am.

The organisers promise authentic samba dancers, DJs, a face painter, party photographer and, playing live, the band Mini Bloco.

Naturally, lots of caipirinhas also get a mention. Tickets cost a fiver and last entry is at 1am.

The 5pm Dining blog can’t samba like it used to and last saw 3am about a decade ago. As a result, we may not be shaking our pants at Boteco do Brazil in the early hours.

Fortunately for us whose passports list ‘codger’ under occupation, the Lothian Street venue has other attractions.

Brazilian national dish

We love Brazil’s national dish of feijoada. A hearty stew of black beans, pork ribs, smoked bacon, salt beef and smoked sausage, at Boteco do Brazil it is served with rice, chilli salad, flavoured cassava flour and slices of orange.
