Next week is Slow Food Week and the Edinburgh branch of the movement has all sorts of goodies planned:

Forgotten foods

On Monday 2nd June, celebrations kick off with a meal from Neil Forbes at Café St Honore.

A member of the Slow Food UK Chef’s Alliance, Neil is putting together three courses and a glass of wine or a beer for £25.

Many of the menu items are Ark of Taste/Forgotten Foods. Here’s the menu:

Clyde Valley tomatoes and Keens Cheddar puff pastry tart, English watercress

Peelham Farm Tamworth braised pork belly, Peelham Farm chorizo, apple, heritage potatoes

Yorkshire rhubarb & almond tart

Artisan Roast Coffee or Organic Clipper Tea with truffle

Tour de Gorgie

On Wednesday 4th June, Slow Food Edinburgh will be visiting Gorgie City Farm. The event will start at 6.30pm with a tour of the farm.

Afterwards, it’s BBQ time, tasting Gorgie pork chops and Gorgie sausage hot dogs, with locally grown salads and Gorgie relish. There will be a non-meat alternative. This will be followed by a dessert and tea or coffee.

There’ll be samples of beer from Top Out brewery and soft drinks from Roots Soda. Finally, there’ll be a short talk and discussion about the farm’s philosophy and future direction.

There are only twenty places for this event, costing £12.50 for Slow Food members and £15 for those yet to join. Tickets are available from the farm, either with a credit card payment on 0131 337 4202, or in person before the event.

Escargot Goes Slow

On Thursday 5th June, chef patron Fred Berkmiller is laying on a nose-to-tail buffet-style meal at L’Escargot Blanc.

Pork from Gorgie Farm will be at the centre of the evening. Fred will be demonstrating how to put a whole pig on the table: pâté, pig’s head, ears, black pudding, a roast, even sausages , plus one dessert (non-porcine!).

Tickets are £20.

Farmers’ Market pop-up

Bringing the week to a close is something a little special at the Edinburgh Farmers’ Market on Saturday 7th June.

Slow Food Edinburgh will be at Castle Terrace to celebrate Slow Food Week with a pop-up event.

Brunch starts at 10.30am thanks to the good people from Edinburgh Larder Bistro. The menu includes smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and pastries, plus a glass of fizz. £10 for Slow Food members, £11 for non-members.

Lunch begins at 1pm with a platter of some of the best food at the market and artisan bread. The main course will be lamb paired with a local beer.

This will be followed by a seasonal dessert, tea, coffee and chocolates.  Lunch costs £19 for Slow Food members and £21 for non-members, including one beer or non-alcoholic alternative.

Food will be served at the market, against the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. There are twelve places for each sitting, so booking is essential. Email info@slowfoodedinburgh.co.uk to reserve your space, including any dietary requirements.

Ingredients will be sourced from the market and guests will be joined for a few words by some of the producers. All surplus proceeds will go to support Slow Food Edinburgh and their work to support good, clean and fair food.
