Afternoon tea at Johnny Depp’s was never a straight forward affair.

It’s all going a bit Alice in Wonderland at Twenty Princes Street.

The city centre restaurant has just launched its new Afternoon Tea Adventure and is inviting guests to ‘tumble down the rabbit hole’ with them.

Now before we all get too excited, they are not offering one potion to make you big and one to make you small.

Instead, Executive Chef Tony Sarton and his kitchen brigade have developed a theatrical afternoon tea where nothing is what it seems.

On first appearance, nothing looks out of the ordinary. There are dainty cakes, pastries and sarnies – as you would expect.

Up is down and down is up

However, closer investigation reveals that the items which look sweet are actually savoury while the savoury dishes are sweet.

We’re talking vanilla and mango scotch eggs, lobster crème brûlée, chocolate sushi and chocolate samosas.

Eat your heart out, Heston.

Twenty’s Afternoon Tea Adventure costs £18 per person including a selection of teas and coffees or £26 per person including a glass of chilled Champagne. It is served daily from 3pm to 5pm.

Sunday roast

Sticking with Twenty, they have also started serving up a different roast of the day served with all the trimmings every Sunday for just £20.

Alternatively, guests can pre-order a roast of their choice. Options include a roast sirloin, Iberian suckling pig or leg of lamb, all of which are carved at the table.
