Sugar Dumplin’ is aiming for a beach bar vibe.

Zoinks!

Two new restaurants have just opened in Glasgow and neither are burger bars. Hallelujah and pass the jerk sauce.

On Hope Street, Fire in Babylon is all about West Indian food, music and culture.

A short stroll away, Sugar Dumplin’ in Princes Square bills itself as a Caribbean barbecue and bar.

Fire in Babylon has been running a pop-up kitchen and gigs in Glasgow for a couple of years now.

We think we are right in saying that they have links with The Rum Shack on Pollokshaws Road but don’t quote us on that.

A restaurant and takeaway, Fire in Babylon offers a short menu packed with dishes such as saltfish fritters, fried plantain, jerk fish with rice ‘n’ peas, Ital stew and chargrilled chicken sandwiches with mango salsa.

Curried goat and rum

Over at Princes Square, Sugar Dumplin’ has a large menu divided into sections such as roti wraps, starters and sharers, desserts, burgers and main courses.

The more eye-catching dishes include corn and plantain fritters with pickled cucumber and watermelon salad; curried goat shoulder and pork ribs braised in rum and finished on the char grill.

The drinks menu is huge and, as you might imagine, many of the cocktail options are rum based.

Incidentally, Sugar Dumplin’ are looking for musicians. If you are handy with a steel drum or can safely operate a set of bongos then they want to hear from you.

The 5pm Dining blog wishes both restaurants all the best.

And while we’re here, it’s time for another visit to the old jokes’ home:

How does Bob Marley like his donuts?

Wi’ jammin, obviously.

I’ll get me coat.
