Thirsty work at OX184.

The 5pm Dining blog was at the official opening of OX184 on Edinburgh’s Cowgate last night.

We had blogged about it when it first opened back in March but last night was the first time that we have seen the kitchen’s open fire ovens in action.

As well as smoking their own meats in-house, they cook a lot of their dishes over a wood-fired grill.

It gives dishes like their pork and beef sausages a delicious tang. In fact, the entire bar has the gentlest hint of smoke about.

Close your eyes, put your fingers in your ears and you could just about imagine yourself in a highland bothy warming yourself over a fire.

Add in a cracking craft beer offer plus a great range of whiskies, bourbons and rums, and OX184 is a belter.

It’s the latest venture from Fuller Thomson who also run Edinburgh’s Southern and Red Squirrel bars as well as Holyrood 9a which is but a brisk five minute stroll from OX184.
