While it seems to be having some teething problems (check their Facebook for updates), it looks as though the Bavaria Brauhaus on Glasgow’s Bothwell Street is going to be a hit.

Themed around a Bavarian beer hall, the spacious venue was packing in drinkers on Friday night.

People are loving the Nichol Wheatley frescoes of Bavarian flags and, somewhat more unexpectedly, the pic of the writer Alasdair Gray which appears if you stand by the back balcony area and look across the ceiling.

The Big Six

As you would expect, the Bavarian beers are a big pull.

Löwenbräu, Hofbräu, Augustinerbräu, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr Bräu and Spatenbräu are known as the Big Six beers which are brewed in Munich and they are available on tap at Bavaria Brauhaus along with some 40 bottled beers.

If you are not a beer drinker, there is a select range of wines available by the glass and bottle including a couple German/Austrian Rieslings and a Blaufränkisch red.

Naturally, there are several varieties of sausage, hearty goulash soups and pork knuckles served with dumplings.

Not that it is all rib-sticking stuff. There are seafood boards, bean burgers and even salads for those who don’t want a meat fest.

Sauerkraut

Of course, it couldn’t be a Bavarian theme bar without sauerkraut and the fermented cabbage dish takes pride of place at the top of the list of side orders.

We know that Republic Bier Halle and WEST at Glasgow Green have both been flourishing for years but it always seems slightly surprising that there are not more German/Austrian-themed bars in Glasgow.

Incidentally, we are running a Big Deal with WEST. For £15, you can enjoy a brewery tour and two course meal. All the info is here.
