Obu 2

So, you know how we said that we would tell you about all the new and imminent Edinburgh openings this week?

Well, we’ve been overtaken by events and we’re going to tell you about Obu instead.

Just opened in Glasgow’s Princes Square, Obu is a pan Asian restaurant cooking up dishes from Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and India.

It is a good looking space which is decorated with prints of The Wave by the Japanese artist Hokusai and Chinese Girl by Vladimir Grigoryevich Tretchikoff.

You would recognise them instantly if you saw them.

Tom, the manager, was brought up in Hong Kong; a city where many of the restaurants pretty much define pan Asian cooking.

Dim sum to sushi

He has overseen a menu which stretches from Chinese dim sum and Japanese sushi to Indian lamb curries and steamed buns filled with pulled pork, kimchi or bulgogi pork.

The kitchen makes as much as possible from scratch even pickling their own ginger.

We have yet to eat there (it only opened last night) but the cinnamon and sugar sweet buns are highly recommended as is the KFC – Korean fried chicken.

Asian cocktails

A lot of thought has gone into the drinks menu. As well as a range of sake and Asian-inspired cocktails such as the Lychee Daiquiri and Japanese Plum Sour, Obu carries a good range of Japanese beers.

Kirin Ichiban is on draught while the bottled beers include two beers from Hitachino.

Their Nest Red Rice Ale is a 7% beer which is described as a ‘beautiful hazy pink coloured ale brewed with ancient red rice. Sake like flavours with a hint of strawberry on the nose and palate’.
