Culture vultures will have plenty to dip their beaks into as Edinburgh’s new Festival Theatre Cafe launches officially this week.

Following an extensive re-branding exercise and a complete refurbishment, the 65 seat Festival Theatre Cafe is now run by Renegade Chef, the sister company of award-winning boutique event caterer Appetite Direct.

A range of innovative salads – made fresh each day – forms a large part of the offer. Typical choices might be the chargrilled cauliflower, cherry tomato and dill caper salad or the Puy lentils with roasted butternut squash, feta, sun blush tomatoes, toasted pumpkin seeds and wilted spinach.

Gourmet toasties

There are gourmet toasted sarnies made with artisan breads and sides such as sweet potato fries and purple sprouting broccoli.

We liked the sound of main course options like the slow roasted pork belly served with black pudding and a sweet pear and celeriac mash. Or perhaps the char grilled lemon and garlic marinated chicken breast served with a toasted cashew and apricot quinoa.

Aiming at the lunch and pre-theatre markets, Festival Theatre Cafe is Monday to Saturday, 9am-6pm, with extended opening hours (including Sundays) when performances are showing.

It’s managed by Josh Bebbington who, after gigs in Paris, Germany and Austria, has recently done stints with Glasgow’s Crabshakk, as well as Ox and Finch.

Keep your eyes peeled for the occasional pop-up restaurant at the Festival Theatre Cafe.
