The new Rollo on Broughton Street.
The new Rollo on Broughton Street.

Maybe we’re just missing the goss but, recently, Glasgow seems to have been relatively quiet on the new openings front.

The exception to the rule is the Hippo Taproom which has opened on Sauchiehall Street in the former Cocktail and Burger basement bar on Sauchiehall Street.

Specialising in craft beers from around the world, it is the on-licence offspring of the Hippo Beers off licence on Queen Margaret Drive.

As you might expect, the beer list is spectacular. Whether you fancy an oude geuze or a hefeweiss, the Hippo team can sort you out.

It seems to be having a soft opening at the moment with the full launch taking place on Saturday.

Set sail for Cadiz seafood

On the other side of the M8, Cadiz is gearing up to open its doors in a couple of weeks.

Located above Cafe Andaluz on George Street, we are told that the 80 cover Cadiz will be ‘the perfect hideaway to enjoy a glass of wine from our specially selected wine list accompanied by the best Scottish seafood with a distinctly international flavour’.

Like Cafe Andaluz, it is part of the DMR group.

Rollo keeps rolling

Tootling along to Broughton Street, Rollo has opened on the site formerly occupied by Bonsai.

Much like the original Rollo in Stockbridge, it serves a mix of bites, bowls and plates. Think crispy pork belly with salsa verde or panko-crumbed aubergine batons with a lemon aioli.

Just around the corner, on Picardy Place, Clouds and Soil has gone to the great restaurant cloud in the sky.

Il Calice appears to be taking its place. Named after the Italian for cup, it will offer coffee, wine and cocktails.

About a month back, we told you that Bourbon nightclub and The Ninja Kitchen would be opening on Frederick Street in June.

As is often the way with new openings, the date has slipped a little and the launch has been postponed until next month.
