Bag O' NailsThe latest to join the fray of bars of Partick is Bag O’ Nails, a new music bar from the same people behind Slouch, Howlin’ Wolf and Maggie Mays.

Named after a Soho music bar which was big in the Sixties, Bag O’ Nails is on Dumbarton Road in the building which previously housed the Partick Tavern.

Older readers may remember the dark days when pub grub meant Scotch pies festering in a cage on the bar plus packs of peanuts mounted on cardboard which gradually unveiled a scantily clad model as the peanuts were scoffed.

How things have changed.

Steamed dumplings

At Bag O’ Nails, there is a selection of fried and steamed Cantonese dumplings filled with everything from haggis to short rib.

More substantial options include confit, corn-fed chicken breast served with roasted vine tomatoes, a mushroom duxelle, champit mash and a Laphroaig whisky sauce.

Even the mac ‘n’ cheese is posh. At Bag O’ Nails. They make theirs with smoked Arran cheddar and Grana Padano.

As well as an extensive collection of bourbon, they sell lots and lots of lovely beer. The range goes from old faves such William Bros Joker IPA to Belgian Trappist beers.

Apparently, they are the only bar in Scotland serving Rothaus Hefeweizen on draught.

The cocktail list is fun. The description for the LA Woman goes like this: Introducing Mr Jim Beam, a charming chap, to Miss Southern Comfort. From there, take the second left and add Pepsi and lime. Then you realise you’re lost… bugger.’

Quite.

New Dram mag out now

While on the subject of new openings, the latest addition of Dram mag is out and, as well as all the news on Scotland’s bar trade, they have a good couple of pages on cocktails.

It seems that garnishes such as lime are on the way out. Keep your eyes peeled for cocktails made from mushrooms and decorated with flowers.
