'What time is dinner?' is never a question at Finsbay.
‘What time is dinner?’ is never a question at Finsbay.

This 5pm Dining blogger is back in the saddle after some holidays and we’re catching up on recent openings.

Today, we will look at new restaurant openings in Glasgow and tomorrow it will be Edinburgh’s turn.

First up, we have Finsbay which has opened on Main Street in Milngavie.

It’s a casual lunch, brunch and dinner kind of place with a neat line in retro decor. Apparently, the approved term for the look is ‘granny chic’.

This is worrying for your blogger. Despite being a relatively spritely fortysomething and a very long way from being a grandfather, many of the design features stir memories from my distant youth.

Kicking it old school

As well as Sixties/Seventies style clocks and dial-up phones, they have found an old school blackboard.

Currently it seems to list the cocktail list and daily specials – rather more appealing than the algebra equations which haunted my teenage years.

The various menus run from morning rolls to dinner items such as the grilled pork chop, chorizo and black pudding hash and peppered spinach; burgers in a variety of guises or mussels in a choice of sauces.

The Savings Bank

We also have news of The Savings Bank, a new events space on Bridge Street. Originally, a hatter’s shop, it was, among other things, a bank, Greek restaurant and poker club before it was renovated by Inhouse.

Done out in a very glam, vintage style, it looks fantastic.

Bread Meats Bread

In other news, we understand that Bread Meats Bread is to open their West End branch on the Great Western Road this Friday.

Crossing the Rubicon

They will be pipped to the post by their near neighbours Crossing The Rubicon who open on Thursday at 372 Great Western Road.

Offering curry and craft beer, the new venture is a Glasgow version of the successful VDeep bar and restaurant in Leith.

More news as we get it.
