The Mallard Bar opened on Glasgow’s Great Western Road just over a month ago.

We mentioned it briefly on the blog but, now that the menus are available, we reckon it merits another kick of the can.

It is run by the same team that have The Drake (bookable via 5pm Dining) on nearby Lynedoch Street.

The new crew gutted the premises, formerly Gambrino Pizzeria, and supervised a complete refurb over an eight week period.

The 40 cover gastropub now boasts a neat mix of stripped stone, Harris tweed and a gorgeous copper-topped bar.

Pigeon at The Mallard Bar

The Mallard’s opening menu has lots to recommend it.

Starters like the pigeon, black pudding croquette, smoked carrot purée and onion jam read well.

It would be easy to imagine eating a dish like that or the crab cannelloni with sweetcorn and pickled fennel.

The main courses have just as much appeal. Cod, samphire and chorizo new potatoes get our vote.

On a more meaty tip, the pig cheeks with garden peas, smoked bacon and chestnut mushrooms sound like an ideal dish for a cold, blustery day.

Pizza on The Mallard Bar menu

The Mallard inherited a top notch pizza oven from the previous inhabitants.

As well as the sort of main courses mentioned above, they also offer a select range of pizza.

Obviously, no one wants a chef with time on their hands so the kitchen brigade at The Mallard also run daily specials.

The idea of the Scotch egg made with duck egg and black pudding, coated in breadcrumbs and served with a peppercorn sauce on the side appealed to us.

There are roughly a dozen reds, the same number of white wines plus a handful of rosés and sparklers.

A couple of the cocktails reflect the local neighbourhood.

The Botanical Gardens is made with Grey Goose Le Poire, St Germaine Elderflower Liqueur, fresh lemon juice and sugar, with lemon peel and a cucumber slice.

The 5pm Dining blog hopes that The Mallard takes flight and flies high.
