new restaurant in Edinburgh
Jerome Henry: chef patron of Le Roi Fou, a new restaurant in Edinburgh.

Into the weekend with a new restaurant in Edinburgh.

The capital’s Broughton Street is booming with a diverse array of restaurants and bars offering everything from multi-course, new Nordic feasts to stone-baked pizza via flat breads with multiple toppings.

The latest to join the throng is Le Roi Fou.

Translating as The Mad King, this new modern European restaurant opens tomorrow (Sat 25th March) on Forth Street, just off Broughton Street.

Le Roi Fou is run by Jérôme Henry, formerly head chef at Anton Mosimann’s Private Dining Club in Belgravia.

Before that, he worked Les Trois Garçons in Shoreditch.

Bijou restaurant for bon vivants

The restaurant’s website describes it as ‘A classic bijou restaurant at the Broughton end of Edinburgh New Town for bons vivants’.

Jérôme Henry told The Caterer that: ‘At the centre of most dishes will be the best fresh Scottish produce prepared simply and elegantly, always ensuring that natural flavours are the star of the show. Consistency of quality is vital, and while we will be serving some of the great classics and wonderful fresh fish dishes, I also love to explore my memories of cooking and eating abroad.’

On the set menu (2c £17.50, 3c £21.50), this means starters such as salmon cured in lemon and olive oil with bitter leaves, basil and tarragon or baby gem lettuce, radicchio and grilled avocado with a tahini and miso dressing.

Main courses include grilled North Sea cod and courgettes with freekeh and basil plus braised ox cheek and salt-baked root vegetables with red wine sauce.

The a la carte menu doesn’t hold back on the top notch ingredients with Isle of Skye scallops, wild turbot and Chateaubriand steaks all making an appearance.

There is also a decadent weekend brunch menu on offer. Options include grilled Scottish langoustines and avocado on sourdough toast.

In what is perhaps a first for an Edinburgh restaurant, Le Roi Fou has a creative director.

Isolde Nash has helped create the feel of the restaurant’s bar and salon. The design is said to be influenced by the Twenties Austrian architect Adolf Loos, Dada and the Absurd.

The 5pm Dining blog wishes Le Roi Fou a long and happy reign.

New restaurant in Edinburgh

Of course, Le Roi Fou is not the only new restaurant in Edinburgh.

In previous blog posts, we pointed out that the Bier Hoose bar was taking shape on Leith Walk while Ronaq Indian restaurant was expanding with a new branch at the Arches/New Waverley development.

Both are now very much up and running.

And that’s not all on the new restaurant in Edinburgh front. The 5pm Dining blog will return on Monday with more hot goss.
