Paper Mill

The Paper Mill is one of the most recent restaurants to join 5pm Dining.

An all-day restaurant and bar on Westmill Road in the tranquil conservation village of Lasswade, it was formerly a mill. As you may have guessed from the name.

Once an industrious little village, Lasswade hosted flour mills, a carpet factory and several paper mills.

In fact, the village was renowned for the production of fine papers made from Esparto grass imported from Africa.

The era of papermaking ended with the closure of the last mill on the Esk in 2004.

These days, golf courses, a garden plant nursery and a riding centre offer more genteel past times.

New life

The Paper Mill has been cleverly converted to its new life as a social hub for the village.

The sensitive use of reclaimed materials and found objects has produced a welcoming, contemporary interior.

One which is sympathetic to both the building’s industrial heritage and the village’s historical surroundings.

The Paper Mill overlooks the River Esk and the spacious outdoor terrace beside the river is very popular during the warmer months.

Excellent service, a family-friendly atmosphere and live entertainment keep things buzzing throughout the year.

In May, the venue will run their popular beer festival for the fifth time.

Keeping it seasonal at The Paper Mill

From breakfast, lunch and dinner, to afternoon tea and Sunday roasts, The Paper Mill has dining options for every occasion. What unites every dish is the kitchen’s commitment to local and seasonal sourcing.

While the ingredients are, as far as possible, Scottish, the flavours used come from around the globe.

Confit duck leg is served with a chorizo cassoulet while the calamari comes with cashews, lime, pickled ginger and coriander.

The dry aged steaks and burgers are complemented by lighter options such as sweetcorn and chilli fritters; the chick pea, spinach and feta burger or the prosciutto-wrapped monkfish with a red pepper salsa.

The menus change regularly as does the line-up of Scottish and guest craft beers at The Paper Mill.
