Six by Nico
Six by Nico is reinventing the chippie menu.

After last week’s soft opening, Six by Nico launches officially today.

Run by the same team as Cleveden Road’s 111 by Nico, the Argyle Street restaurant aims to serve a new concept menu every six weeks.

Each six course tasting menu – priced at £25 a head – is themed on a different place, memory or idea.

Launching the idea is The Chippie, Chef Nico Simeone’s innovative take on Scotland’s favourite takeaway.

Don’t expect soggy chips and dubious meat products at this new Finnieston venture which is based in the premises which previously housed Number Eleven, an offshoot of the Crabshakk.

Instead, The Chippie will serve up ‘six dishes based on the classics found in your traditional fish and chip shop – each one re-imagined and re-created with a contemporary twist’.

What this means is that chips and cheese will become a crisp potato cannelloni with crowdie mousse. Smoked sausage will metamorphose into Ayrshire pork with black pudding, apple and celeriac.

Of course, no chippie would be complete without fish dishes and The Chippie serves scampi or rather Scrabster monkfish cheek, squid ink and herb emulsion. The special fish is Shetland cod with sea vegetable, pickled mussels and taramasalata.

Chips and curry sauce V2.0

Offered alongside the standard menu is a veggie Chippie menu. Think beer-battered cauliflower with pomegranate, preserved lime, caper and raisin or chips and curry – gnocchi, caramelised onion and curry oil.

The Chippie at Six by Nico will run from today to Sunday 23rd April. The new menu, or concept, will be kept under wraps until two weeks before it is launched.

The 5pm Dining blog always likes to see new ventures that try something new and Six by Nico certainly ticks that box.

Speaking personally, this blogger wonders how long Six by Nico will be able to come up with a fresh and exciting concept every six weeks.

Perhaps more pertinent is the question of how long the paying public will be delighted by a new, themed menu. Even novelty can sometimes cease to surprise.

Anyway, we wish Nico and his team at Six by Nico every success.
