29 – The Grill on the Square is one of the most popular restaurants on 5pm and we’ve got a few ideas as to why that is.
The food
As its name sake says, 29’s specially designed grill is put to good use. The restaurant is well known for its quality and comprehensive steak offering (double cut fillet mignon, rib eye, porterhouse, plus many more) and is a member of the Scotch Beef Club.
The majority of its steaks are cut from specially selected and certified Scotch beef cattle but they also have USDA and wagyu beef options too.
There are numerous other meat, fish and vegetarian dishes for those looking for something else. You could go for the daily changing market fish of the day or the drunken chicken with Chinese vegetables, toasted sesame and coconut sauce.
For an example of the quality of food and execution, take a look at the video below where Senior Sous Chef Matthew Donnelly shows us how to make posh fish and chips.
The location
Placed slap bang on Glasgow’s Royal Exchange Square, 29 has a wonderful outlook across the sparkly lights of the Square and on to the beautiful GOMA building.
It’s right in in the city centre, with both St Enoch and Buchanan subways stations nearby as well as both Queen Street and Central train stations just a short walk away. An ideal excuse to leave the car at home and enjoy a glass of fizz or a cocktail from their extensive menu.
The celebs
The walls of 29 are adorned with pics of celebs who’ve visited. Recent celebrity visitors include Noel Gallagher, Lorraine Kelly, Alex Ferguson and Lulu.
The venue is also a private members’ club frequently hosting celebrity driven charity and launch events and after parties like the recent MOBO awards after party.

“Service was excellent. The Meal deal ( 29 for 2) is excellent value. It was a new menu from my last visit. There was a supplement for the salmon fishcake but it was worth it. I had Drunkin chicken which was very tasty. Moved to the bar area afterwards where a veru good Malt whisky was on special offer. A most enjoyable evening”. – 5pm diner Margaret
Two courses with a bottle of wine for two on a Saturday night is the best deal in town. Food was delicious and the house red is pretty decent. It was a bit noisy but that’s only to be expected on a Saturday. World definitely go back and highly recommend. – 5pm diner Lesley
