To Bearsden where Monadh Kitchen has just opened its doors.

‘Seasonal produce cooked with care and served with heart’ is one strapline at this New Kirk Road bistro.

‘Local Scottish cuisine’ is another.

We can happily get behind both.

If memory serves, this address has seen several incarnations over the last few years. Hopefully, Monadh Kitchen have found a formula that will stick.

It has a pleasantly rustic interior. All soothing greys, browns and wood.

As you might expect from a neighbourhood business, the owners are aiming for a relaxed and intimate vibe rather than anything formal or glam.

Select menu

The a la carte menu is select with five starters and five main courses plus a couple of steak options.

This seems wise from a number of perspectives. It is not a big space and we’re guessing that it doesn’t have a massive kitchen.

Doing a small number of dishes well is preferable to offering thirty and being stretched. Having a limited number of dishes will also help keep a grip on stock levels, wastage and, consequently, costs.

Monadh Kitchen is not trying to reinvent the culinary wheel. Instead, they have a line-up of dishes that you actually want to eat rather than a beauty parade of exotic ingredients and outré techniques.

We’re all for a spot of culinary whizz bang. But probably not in the neighbourhood place around the corner.

At Monadh Kitchen, typical starters might be the heirloom tomato and Ayrshire goat cheese salad or the chicken liver pâté with fig chutney and country bread.

If you want to go posh, there are seared scallops with a cauliflower and lemon risotto and dill oil. We’re always delighted to see a prawn cocktail on a menu.

Main courses range from hearty ox cheek steak pies to a more delicate poached salmon in a crab bisque with saffron potatoes and sea vegetables.

As we mentioned, there are steaks: a flat iron and a sirloin. Both are served with chips, onion rings and pepper sauce.
