The 5pm Dining blog has been focusing on Edinburgh recently. But fear not, for we also bring glad tidings of new Glasgow restaurants.
First up, it would appear that kebabs are having their moment in the sun.
For most of us a kebab was probably a dirty little secret enjoyed late at night after one beer too many.
Not anymore. With the opening of ‘Babs in Glasgow and an expansion of interest in Turkish/Middle Eastern food, it seems kebabs are at risk of becoming respectable.
Scheduled to open in September, Doner Haus is promising Berlin-style kebabs and steins of beer.
Having launched the fledgling chain in Sunderland earlier this year, the idea looks set to be rolled out across the country.
Doner Haus rolling into Glasgow
The former Giraffe premises on the corner of West Regent and West Nile Street will house the second Doner Haus.
According to their website, they are a gourmet doner joint but they are keen to stress this doesn’t mean that they are either posh or charging ‘a fortune for the same product that you get on the street corner at 3am’.
We’re delighted to hear it.
Apparently, it means that their meat content is 85% (beef and turkey in their Berliners) with a ‘15% fat content and some added spices to keep your meat juicy and delicious to taste’.
Chicken kebabs, wurst sausages and veggie options are also on the menu.
Beers, wines, mojitos and milkshakes will prevent anyone getting too thirsty.
New Glasgow restaurants: Rocca Ristorante
There is also an extensive drinks list – including quite a few cocktails – at Rocca Ristorante on Cadzow Street, Hamilton.
Formerly Andiamo, the premises have rebranded and re-opened recently.
We like the sound of the salsiccia pizza, topped with spicy Italian sausage. But we wouldn’t say no to the Rocca pizza. The house speciality is topped with haggis.
Pasta, risotto dishes, seafood options and steaks all add to the menu’s appeal.
Rocca Ristorante will be added to 5pm Dining and available to book online in the next couple of days.
