You don’t need to be a fan of the Coen brothers’ film to enjoy a visit to this Dude-approved Morrison Street bar. However, fans of The Big Lebowski will appreciate the wide range of White Russian cocktails while film lovers will know how handy Lebowskis is for several Edinburgh cinemas and theatres. Other classic cocktails, DJs, acoustic music and quizzes are among the other non-food related attractions.

Cinematic American touches distinguish the playful décor, with its scissor motifs, barber’s chairs and comfortable retro-style booths and banquettes. It’s the ideal spot for a little daytime laptop surfing or a relaxed post-work cocktail and meal. They even let you bring your hound.

Their 5pm Sales offer is £12 per person for a burger or hotdog, fries + a cocktail.

Burger + Pint of Tennent’s at Villager

Villager is a hip hangout in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Popular with Edinburgh’s young professionals, Villager is a lovably eccentric cocktail bar and restaurant on George IV Bridge. Great for people watching, it has two rooms decked out with a quirky mix of chandeliers, gilt-edged mirrors and hip hop/graffiti-inspired wall markings. DJs keep the bar buzzing at the weekends.

Booking via the 5pm Sale, £12 will buy you a pint of Tennent’s plus a 6oz Edin Burger or a Linda McCartney patty. Both are served on a toasted pretzel bun, garnished with lettuce, tomato, red onion and a dill pickle with delicious creamy slaw on the side.

2 Buffalo Burgers + Drinks at The Green Mantle

Popular with students and other local residents, the Green Mantle on West Crosscauseway is a quirky, modern bar housed in a traditional Edinburgh pub setting. Live music, sports and a very popular quiz night keep the Mantle buzzing. Located in the heart of the Southside, it is a much loved and evolving veteran of the local pub scene.

‘Good quality, local ingredients, simply prepared’ is the ethos in the kitchens at the Green Mantle. Pride of place goes to the range of burgers featuring buffalo from Fife’s Puddledub Farm.

Bar Soba Edinburgh is a stylish, modern noodle bar offering a variety of pan-Asian street food set on Hanover Street in Edinburgh’s city centre. Wheelchair accessible, the restaurant in the basement is a relaxed and informal dining space with cosy tables perfect for sharing a well as quieter tables for smaller groups. We’re looking at the veggie gyoza dumplings followed by the crispy fried chicken in buttermilk with katsu sauce and cucumber in a brioche bun with Thai fries and curry sauce.

2 Courses on Set Dinner Menu at Verve Grill

Verve Bar and Grill is the stylish restaurant at Village Urban Resort Edinburgh. Located on Crewe Road South, it is a premium casual restaurant which features a smart contemporary decor. Think stripped brick walls, leather seats, a zinc bar and an open grill.

Verve Bar and Grill is part of the Village Urban Resort Edinburgh on Crewe Road South. Edinburgh city centre, Edinburgh Zoo and Murrayfield Rugby Stadium are all a short drive.

Verve Grill’s 5pm Sale offer is £12 per person for two courses from the set dinner menu. Dishes change regularly but typical starters might be the sticky ribs with a bourbon BBQ glaze or the roasted sweet potato bisque which is served with chilli yoghurt.

Popular main courses include the chicken Kiev; the chickpea, spinach and sweet potato curry or the house burger – a 7oz prime hamburger topped with cheddar and bacon.

3 Courses from Daily Set Menu + Tea or Coffee at Smoke Stack

Smoke Stack: a Broughton Street favourite since the Nineties.

A popular fixture on Edinburgh’s Broughton Street since the 1990s, Smoke Stack is a laidback steak house and bar. Stone walls, tiles, chunky wooden furniture and bare light bulbs give it a stripped back feel but the atmosphere is as warm and welcoming as you could wish for.

Book into Smoke Stack with the 5pm Sale for £12 per person and each guest can enjoy a starter, main course and dessert.

We would start with the meatballs; move onto the pulled pork bap with Cajun chips and finish off with the cheesecake.

And then we would go and lie down in a quiet, dark room for a couple of hours.
