Glasgow food news: the staff at Romans Pizzeria in the Merchant City are waiting to welcome you. Pic: Facebook

First up in the latest edition of Glasgow food news: Romans Pizzeria in the Merchant City has just launched.

You may remember that way back in December, we told you work had started in the old Khublai Khan premises on Candleriggs.

Word was that the team from the Steak, Cattle and Roll restaurants were branching out from burgers and carving themselves a piece of the pizza pie.

Glasgow food news: Romans Pizzeria

Just opened in the last couple of days, Romans Pizzeria offers ten different sorts of pizza. They are all cooked in the impressively massive pizza oven in view of the dining space.

As you might expect, they have gone to lengths to ensure authenticity. Their mozzarella and tomatoes are from Campania and both their prosciutto ham and sausage are imported from Italy.

Although what an Italian pizza chef might make of some of the toppings is perhaps more up for a debate.

This blogger hasn’t been to Rome or Naples but we would like to see what sort of reception would be doled out to pizza number eight. Or rather VIII as the menu has it.

This little number is topped with smashed burger, mozzarella, mac ‘n’ cheese, pancetta, tomatoes and gherkin.

To be fair, Romans does bill itself as ‘classic Italian pizza with a modern twist’ so it seems a little harsh if they are rather more adventurous than the standard Margherita or quattro stagioni.

If you are in the market for a pizza topped with vegan mozzarella, tomato sauce, mushrooms, onions and smoked vegan chicken then Romans Pizzeria has your number.
