Not so long ago, the word "vegan" had some rather unflattering connotations, usually relating to dreadlocks, tie dye and patchouli oil. Nowadays these stereotypes are completely outdated as veganism moves from a niche lifestyle choice to a common diet for British people -  at the moment more than 3.5 million people in the UK identify as vegan. Many more, while not vegan full time, aim to add more plant based dishes to their diet

Such is the popularity of veganism, most restaurants include at least one vegan dish on their menu and many have gone out of their way to create a selection of dishes so appetising you would never notice the absence of meat, dairy or eggs. Here's the restaurants in Glasgow on 5pm Dining we've pinpointed who offer a great selection for vegans.

Red Onion

Four years ago Red Onion in the city centre received a request to create a vegan set menu for a regular customer's birthday. Red Onion took the request and ran with it and now host a vegan a la carte, vegan Christmas menu, vegan tasting menu and vegan menus for every holiday you can think of, like Mother's Day, Valentine's Day... Those who opt to dine off the vegan menu can expect delicious dishes like spaghetti with vegan meatballs and roast ratatouille tart.

Madha

Madha on Albion Street in the Merchant City has an impressive number of vegan dishes on their menu, including dosas, curries and tandoori. They specify on the menu which of their Indian staples like naan and popadom are vegan and even offer vegan wine.

£15 for 2 courses + side on main menu at Madha on 5pm Dining.

Banana Leaf

Vegan fans of Far Eastern food need to check out Banana Leaf on Byres; the restaurant has a vegan section on their menu featuring mouthwatering dishes like stir fried battered mixed vegetables with salt & chilli, and stir fried eggplant kong po style with dry chilli & cashew nuts. There's plenty of vegan starters and sides too.

Hillhead Bookclub

Hillhead Bookclub in Glasgow's West End has a separate vegetarian menu which includes several vegan options like vegan chilli, vegan kebabs and vegan sloppy joe. Hillhead Bookclub make a point on their website of saying they aim to cater for all dietry requirements.

Slouch

Slouch in Bath Street offers vegan versions of their pub grub dishes; diners can tuck into their vegan pizza, vegan burger and main course dishes which include gnocchi and a noodle stir fry.

La Rambla

The first dishes that spring to mind when you think of Spanish tapas is probably chorizo, Manchego and calamari, but as La Rambla in Paisley point out, a surprising number of tapas dishes are animal product free. Their menu highlights the vegan options available , which include patatas bravas, pan fried mushrooms with garlic, parsley and wine, and slow cooked chickpeas with tomato, onion, garlic and parsley.
