First up, we bring you the semi-sad news that Avo Avo are to shut up shop on their Argyle Street premises on the 16th of July.

When they launched in 2017, there were plenty of commentators who wondered out loud if an avocado-themed restaurant would have much of a shelf life.

Surely it would wither as soon as those fickle millennials moved on?

Or at least that was the narrative.

Actually, in a Facebook post, the owners of Avo Avo say that not being able to get an alcohol licence was the biggest factor in their decision to close.

All being well, they hope to re-open in as yet unannounced premises within the next three months.

Bar Brett to launch this week

The high attrition rate among restaurants, bars and bistros never dissuades others from opening their own place.

The latest to join the mêlée is Bar Brett on Great Western Road.

We are short on details other than Bar Brett will be a wine bar selling sustainable wine and food.

According to their Facebook, they will open this week in the premises that used to house Avenue Coffee and then Charcoal Aroma.

Although that may have been the other way around.

The Gate to swing open on Gallowgate

Skipping from the Great Western Road to the East End, we note that The Gate is preparing to launch on Saturday 13th July.

Billed as a modern, Scottish bar, The Gate is at 251 Gallowgate, opposite Barrowland.

It's the latest venture from drinks supremo Andy Gemmell.

Calton has been changing fast since the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Van Winkle, The Winged Ox at St Luke's and A'Challtain have all brought something new to the area over the last few years.

More recently, 226 Gallowgate or The Bar With No Name, replaced Bairds right next to Barrowland.

Go back ten years - five years? - and the very idea of a bar selling aubergine and sofrito filo pie on the Gallowgate would have been unthinkable.

Big Deal on BBQ Party

Incidentally, if you have a big celebration coming up, or you simply fancy a party with pals, then you should check this 5pm Big Deal from Van Winkle on Gallowgate. The main pic above shows the bar's beer garden.

£299 will bag you a private BBQ for 20 in The Jack Daniels Fire Garden at Van Winkle. Your own private chef will rustle up a selection of grilled wings, burgers, baby back ribs, hot dogs and chicken.

All served with fries, sauce, salad, mac ‘n’ cheese and chilli bowls.
