A recent survey commissioned by P&G Professional revealed that 25% of Brits reckoned that fish 'n' chips was the best takeaway.

A poll of 2,000 adults saw one in four name the classic British dish as the best, beating Chinese and Indian to the top spot.

Nearly one in five Brits visit their local chippy once a week, while another third enjoy a fish supper every month.

And the tradition of ‘Fish Friday’ is also going strong with more than a third of Brits most likely to stop in at the chip shop to signal the start of the weekend.

Fish was by far the most popular accompaniment to chips with battered fish being six times more popular than battered sausages.

To bring out the flavour of their fish and chips, three in five Brits douse their meal in salt, and the same amount also sprinkle on vinegar.

Only one in ten opt for brown sauce, with ketchup being a must-add condiment for a third.

The east coast favourite - chippie sauce - didn't get a mention but curry sauce was voted more popular than gravy, mayonnaise or chilli sauce.
