A couple of years ago, we blogged about a new wave of wine bars opening in Edinburgh.

There have been a couple of casualties since then - farewell to The Fat Pony and Clarke and Lake - but new entrants keep popping up.

A couple of weeks back, Spry opened on Haddington place in the capital. Main pic is from Spry's Facebook.

As well as interesting wines and beers, they serve a rotating range of small plates.

The menu is seasonal but, at launch, choices included cheese and charcuterie, a vegan mushroom and walnut pâté plus goose rillettes.

The wines are organic and are available for takeaway or, with the addition of a £10 corkage charge, they can be enjoyed in a cosy nook at Spry.

Organic, biodynamic or raw?

Organic, natural, biodynamic and raw are all buzz words in the wine industry at the moment and, in Glasgow, Vin Cru will underline the trend when it opens in Merchant Square later this week.

Vin Cru means raw wine and the new venture will specialise in wines made with minimal intervention: no chemicals, preservatives or added sugars.

The teams behind Vi Cru are already going great guns with The Hug and Pint and Dennistoun Bar-B-Que.

All going well, the Merchant city venture will open to the public on Friday and we'll return to the blog with more info after that.

Bruntsfield newbie

Back in Edinburgh, plans have emerged for a new wine bar in Bruntsfield.

Aiming for a mid-December launch, Decanter is taking shape in the former Inca premises on Bruntsfield Road.

Billed as a 'winery and dinery', the new business will concentrate on dishes made with locally sourced ingredients as well as an intriguing wine list.

According to this piece in The Scotsman, they are aiming for a vibe which is not your 'usual wine bar and restaurant'.

Wine bar Big Deals

If all this has made you a little drouthy then you may want to browse these Big Deals and offers we have at popular wine bars.

In Glasgow, the ever popular Vroni's have a Big Deal on a cheese platter plus wine flight for two at £19.

Sticking with Glasgow but moving from the city centre to the Southside, Marchtown are running this Big Deal:  £29 for a cheeseboard for two with a bottle of wine or fizz.

In Edinburgh, £23 will secure a meat or veggie sharing platter for two plus a glass of wine or fizz each at La Casa Spanish restaurant in Leith.
