The Bruntsfield veteran recently relaunched under the management of Jamie Forbes and Andria Stirling.

Originally from Edinburgh, the couple have spent the last fifteen years working in London and South America.

A whisky enthusiast, Jamie started his career at Rick's Bar & Rooms (now Rabble), Candy Bar and then Indigo Yard before moving to London to help launch Albannach.

The new menu is concise but appealing. The main courses currently on offer include pan-fried hake with Savoy cabbage and seasonal greens; braised ox cheeks with a red wine and wild mushroom jus plus a veggie option of roasted and grilled aubergine with Puy lentils and pomegranate.

Drinks events

There is also a grill section featuring steaks, lamb cutlets and a selection of burgers. We like the sound of the lamb and black pudding version.

The à la carte choices are supplemented by a set menu at two courses for £13 or three for £17.

Available noon to 6pm, it offers main courses such as beef Stroganoff; a pork chop in a cider sauce and a sweet potato curry.

A popular feature of the new Henrick's is the programme of monthly drinks events.

Their Wine Society pairs interesting bottles with snacks and stories about the people and vineyards that make the wines. The next one, on Monday 2 March, is called Hidden Haciendas.

The Ginthusiast events do much the same for gin while the Aqua Vitae Club delves into the world of whisky.

Eat the A to Z of meat

Your blogger was most tickled by Henrick's Meat Mondays. This is a monthly club for 'connoisseurs of rare and exotic carnivorous fare'.

The idea is that guests eat their way through the meat alphabet from aardvark to zebra.

Each dinner features a different animal, with a set tasting menu of three courses, and an optional drinks pairing.

The next one is on Monday 24th February and will star elk; billed as the 'king of deer'.
