BrewDog takes a bite out of Cowgate

The Edinburgh bar will follow the same lines as Aberdeen, pictured

Having opened a BrewDog bar in Aberdeen earlier this year, the Fraserburgh-based brewery have just announced that they are to launch a new bar in Edinburgh in, hopefully, April.

The Edinburgh BrewDog bar will be on the Cowgate in the premises formerly occupied by Chasers. Like the Aberdeen bar, it will have a stripped back, utilitarian look and the focus will be on BrewDog’s own craft beers plus bottled offerings from artisan brewers around the globe.

In keeping with BrewDog’s furiously independent ethos, there will be no big name brand beers from multinational brewers.

It will be interesting to see how an operation like BrewDog gets on in the Cowgate, an area of Edinburgh which is perhaps more closely associated with clubbing, stag parties and drinks promos rather than the appreciation of small batch, craft beers.

Still, if anyone can break the mould then it’s probably the BrewDog team. They certainly have plenty of experience of doing things their own way.

BrewDog like to do things differently

The bar won’t have a kitchen but it will be offering taster plates of cold meats and cheese matched to the beers.

If you fancy something a little more substantial before sitting down to a night of craft ale appreciation then the following are a small selection of 5pm members located within a five minute walk of the proposed BrewDog site:

For a posh bite, the Tower has great views and fine seafood; Cucina offers stylish Italian cooking; Creelers does great fish and Howies on Victoria Street offers good value bistro cooking.

Rumour has it that there are plans for a Glasgow branch of the BrewDog empire to open before the end of 2011.
