The cover of George Taber's book on the Judgement of Paris

So. Monday morning. Are we all full of get up and go? Brimming with vim and gusto? Here are a couple of forthcoming wine dinners from 5pm members which should help cast a rosy glow of anticipation over your day.

On Tuesday 21 June, Malmaison’s Director of wines and spirits, the fortuitously named Johnny Walker, will be taking guests on a tour of Spain’s finest vineyards at the Mal Group’s Glasgow restaurant.

The five course meal will be matched with different wines for each course. The event starts at 7pm, costs £39.50 (+ £1.19 booking fee) per person and you can buy tickets here.

On the other side of the M8, Calistoga is also planning an interesting wine dinner. Taking place on Monday 4 July, their event commemorates the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

The back story is that in 1976, a wine merchant called Stephen Spurrier set up a blind wine tasting in Paris for French wine experts. The tasting pitched French wines against Californian bottles. Everyone expected the French wines to sweep the board.

In fact, the French wine experts gave top marks to the American wines in every category. One can barely imagine the ‘horreur’ when the labels were removed.

The result was a victory for New World wines and a real shake-up for the more complacent Old World producers.

Calistoga’s event will feature eight wines from France and California served alongside a four course dinner. Experts from both wine-producing areas will be there to talk guests through their glasses.

The event costs £45 per person.

It has been 35 years since the original judgement of Paris. Who will come out on top at the judgement of Edinburgh?
