Innis & Gunn Rum Cask: a great dessert beer

Perhaps not surprisingly, the blog had a great time last night drinking Innis and Gunn beers matched to ribeye steaks and short ribs at Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin.

Guests also tasted the Innis and Gunn Rum Cask ale matched with a dessert featuring banana bread, peanut butter mousse and chocolate fondant.

I know, I know, beer and dessert doesn’t sound like a winning combo but the sweet, slightly spicy rum flavours were best buddies with the dark chocolate and the salty peanut butter mousse.

Obviously, rum and banana was a no brainer.

The food and drink tasting events are a fun way to try new drinks, test a kitchen’s creativity and meet like minded scoffers. If it appeals then Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin are running a Craggy Range wine lunch on Saturday 5th of November.

Winemaker Warren Adamson and HdV’s Chief Sommelier Sebastiano Ingaliso will there to talk diners through the New Zealand winery’s range while head chef Matt Powell will be slaving over a hot stove to produce matching dishes.

The cost is £65 per head plus booking fee. You can book here but look sharp. These events tend to go quickly.

Looking a little further ahead, the hotel is also running a Christmas Market on the 8th of December in the evening. There will be carol singers, minced pies, mulled wines and stalls run by kitchen’s local suppliers as well as arts and crafts stalls.

This hasn’t been absolutely finalised yet but there may a winter BBQ on offer.

Entry to the Christmas Market is free.
