The original Kama Sutra on Sauchiehall Street

‘Aromatic foods, seductive music, sensuous perfumes and sultry surroundings’ will be getting Lothian Road all hot under the collar when the latest offshoot of the Kama Sutra group of Indian restaurants opens today.

The new restaurant will be part of a mini-chain which includes the original Kama Sutra on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street and the new Kama Sutra which has just opened in Stirling.

All three are owned by the same company which also has Slumdog, Torres and Ashoka at the Mill in Glasgow.

The original Kama Sutra opened in 1996 on Sauchiehall Street where its slightly saucy decor and authentic spicing quickly won it a loyal band of followers. The Stirling branch was added to the family tree a couple of months ago.

In a way, the spicy delights of the new Edinburgh branch were already introduced the capital when Kama Sutra travelled across the M8 to take part in June’s Taste of Edinburgh festival.

According to one of the owners, the new Kama Sutra will be serving similar dishes to the other branches.

This means spicy chops cooked in the tandoor oven; regional classics such as the Himalayan hotpot and specials like the murg Japiuri: a semi-dry dish of barbecue chicken cooked with ground onions, green peppers, mushrooms, fresh herbs and selected prices.

On Twitter, the restaurant has also been dropping hints about seafood dishes like crab tikka.
