The Whole Foods Market store in Giffnock: it's a peach

Hark! Can you hear the celestial choirs of angels singing? There must be a new branch of Whole Foods Market opening.

Giffnock is the lucky destination for Scotland’s first branch of the Whole Foods Market chain; an American supermarket which aims to have a rigorous ethical sourcing policy. They make big efforts to work with local producers and products from over 400 Scottish suppliers will be on the shelves when the unit opens today.

Almost a cross between a farmers’ market and a supermarket, the retail maverick concentrates on organic, natural and local produce. Everything they sell is free of artificial flavours, sweeteners, colours, preservatives and hydrogenated fats.

Your blogger visited the original store in Austin, Texas a few years back and it was pretty impressive. The produce displays do look as though they have come out of a picture book entitled Perfect Food.

There will be a 34 seat cafe in the new store with hot and cold food bars. Apparently, handmade pies are on the menu although the blog was taked with the news that they have a machine which customers can use to create their own peanut butter.

The Scotsman has a massive piece on the store here. The Telegraph has a more business-oriented article here under the less than helpful headline: Whole Foods takes on home of fried Mars bar
