More new bars

The Libertine: a new addition to Bell Street

Visiting a new bar may not be top of your priority list at the moment but there are some interesting recent openings in Glasgow.

In the Merchant City, The Libertine is picking up trade after launching late last year. Formerly, Merchant’s House and The Red Lizard before that, the bar was given its new name after asking its customers what they wanted it to be called.

The Bar with No Name was one of the more popular choices but The Libertine won out in the end.

Pie Nirvana

A wide-ranging menu of classic pub grub makes up the food offer but special mention must go to their pie page. The blog has often predicted that pies are due a culinary comeback and, after many false dawns, could The Libertine be the bar to lead the weay to a new pie-based Nirvana?

The blog hopes so.

The Clash

In non-pie-based news, Dukes Bar on Old Dumbarton Road opened in December. We mentioned it in the beginning of November and pointed out that the premises had featured on The Clash’s Busking Tour back in 1985.

The new bar promises occasional live entertainment. For obvious reasons, The Clash will never make a reappearance but, if a fairy godmother were to wave a magic wand, who would you like to see play your local?

‘Cos it’s the start of the year, my first day back at work and I’m feeling a little maudlin then I’ll go for The Vaselines singing ‘Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam’.

Anyone else have more upbeat choices?
