Mark Greenaway: let customers pay what they want

Mark Greenaway at No 12 Picardy Place in Edinburgh has taken a bold step to get punters through the door in January. From Monday until the end of January (excluding the 25th), diners at the restaurant can pay what they like for their food.

Innovative restaurant

Since opening his eponymous restaurant last February, Greenaway has made quite a splash on Edinburgh’s eating out scene and is one of the restaurants nominated for the Most Innovative Restaurant Award at the Scottish Restaurant Awards.

The chef is one of the few Scottish restaurants to make the most of the internet when it comes to promoting his business and the ‘pay what you want’ offer looks like another canny move.

It’s an eye-catching deal but perhaps not as reckless as it first looks. There was a flurry of stories about restaurants doing this when the credit crunch struck and most customers paid the going rate or even slightly more for their food.

Obviously, there are always a couple of chancers with the brass neck to short change the restaurant but it seems that most people are so keen to appear decent or honest that they pay more or less what the bill would have come to anyway.

5pm January sale

If you want to eat out without bruising already tender bank balances then there is no shortage of top deals on 5pm. As of Monday, we will be running a January sale with restaurants in Edinburgh and Glasgow offering two course meals for £12 or less.

We will also kick off our Celtic Connections Dinearound deals with a number of Glasgow restaurants offering two or three course meals for £15.95.

The pages are still being filled with participating restaurants but we’ll bring you more news when the deals go live on Monday.
