A hop, skip and jump from Kelvinbridge subway is the basement bar and kitchen, the Lansdowne.

Casual dining with a great atmosphere in the evenings, their Christmas menus feature the classic prawn cocktail starter for traditionalists and a lovely seasonal veggie main mushroom, brie and cranberry wellington – sautéed mushrooms, hazelnuts and cranberries topped with brie and encased in puff pastry.

Hillhead Bookclub

Attracting a younger crowd attracted by the music, atmosphere and ping pong tables, Hillhead Bookclub serves rustic bar food and its Christmas menu features starters like goats cheese, beetroot & walnut tart with truffle oil and spiced onion chutney and mains like braised brisket of beef with pancetta, baby onions and red wine.

They’re Christmas desserts are worth a look too or as they call them ‘the belt busting, scale shaking final course of Christmas’ – we’d go for the homemade gypsy creams with ginger pouring cream.
