Why Malmaison Glasgow's afternoon tea is a delight

Hot chocolate served in a mini milk bottle with a retro straw? Passionfruit pavlova? Tiramisu? You’ll find all these non traditional treats at Malmaison Glasgow’s afternoon tea.

Malmaison have taken that most British tradition and put their own stylish stamp on it, serving it in their funky Chez Mal bar which is decorated in neon colours and pop art prints.

They invited us along to enjoy it and the quality and attention to detail was clear. Here’s Malmaison Glasgow’s afternoon tea.

Afternoon tea at Malmaison Glasgow

The afternoon tea itself. A selection of wraps, mini burgers, scones and sweet treats with two glasses of fizz on the side.

A glass of fizz gives afternoon tea that bit of sparkle.

We started off with the savoury dishes. First, a mini burger.

Then we moved on to the wraps. Hot smoked salmon with creme fraiche and chipotle chicken with avocado.

Next we got stuck into the scones – both fruit and plain, served with strawberry jam, apricot jam, marmalade, honey and cream.

Confession: scones smothered in cream and jam might be my favourite part of an afternoon tea.

The top layer of sweet treats was stuck into next. First the salted chocolate brownie.

Then the passionfruit pavlova which had the most striking taste in the afternoon tea. The fondant in the middle had a burst of passionfruit flavour.

When I saw the mini milk bottle with a retro striped straw inside I assumed it was a chocolate milkshake. So it was a pleasant surprise to take a sip and discover it was hot! A mini hot chocolate – perfect for a cold autumn day. (The bottle was full to the top – I had started drinking it then remembered to take a pic!)

Then the tiramisu. A decadent delight.

By this point we were almost so stuffed we couldn’t manage the lemon and polenta cake. Almost.

The light citrus sponge was the perfect way to end our afternoon tea.

We floated (or maybe rolled) out of Malmaison with our bellies full and heads filled with Champagne bubbles.

Afternoon tea at Malmaison Glasgow was the perfect indulgent treat for an autumn afternoon.
