Pickled Ginger turns two and lays on a ten course tasting menu to celebrate tonight

Sushi is always on the menu at Pickled Ginger.

Happy birthday Pickled Ginger!

The Japanese/Korean restaurant in Finnieston is celebrating its second birthday with a rather special meal tonight.

Drawing inspiration from Tokyo to Osaka, Pickled Ginger is holding a tasting dinner this evening from 6pm until late.

For £20 per person, diners can enjoy a ten course menu as well as a Nikka Whisky masterclass.

As proud Scots, we have to point out that Scotch is the original whisky and blah blah blah…

However, have you tasted Japanese whisky recently? Some of it is fantastic. In particular, the Nikka Coffey Malt is superb.

Anyway, I digress.

Pickled Ginger top dishes

A Nikka Whisky masterclass is part of the celebrations.

The tasting menu includes a selection of ten dishes including pork gyoza dumplings; yaki sake – marinated Scottish salmon cuts in a soy and spice mix – plus a Korean dish of marinated beef and vegetables, served with steamed rice, lettuce wraps, and Korean barbeque sauce.

Sushi lovers can tuck into the head chef’s showcase selection of the most popular sushi. We’re talking volcano rolls, spicy tuna and smoked salmon and cream cheese.

The menu also includes a cocktail made with Nikka From The Barrel whisky, lemongrass and the nation’s favourite ginger – Irn Bru.

This will pair a refreshing dessert of mango mochi.

Nikka Whisky’s Speciality Brands ambassador will be there to talk about Nikka Whisky. In the early part of the 20th century, the brand’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, spent time at Glasgow University before setting up the first whisky distillery in Japan.

Scottish bride goes to Japan

He married a Scottish girl from Kirkintilloch. It’s a remarkable story and you can read it here.

Speaking of the event, general manager Ross Smyth said:

‘Pickled Ginger is a vibrant, relaxed restaurant and bar where you can sample a real flavour of the Orient. We’ve been slowly building our collection of Japanese whiskies, spirits and cocktails and we’re going to be unveiling some new sips for our customers to sample.

‘The tasting menu has an influence of Korean and Japanese dishes and we wanted to mark our birthday by letting our customers enjoy our bestselling dishes and drinks at a very special rate. It’s brilliant value and a great way for anyone who hasn’t been to Pickled Ginger before to try our delicious food and join in our birthday celebrations!’
