Is Philly's the first new restaurant to open in Edinburgh in 2019?

A 'day hub and night pub', Philly's officially welcomed its first customers yesterday.

We're always happy to be corrected but, by our reckoning, that makes Philly's the first new restaurant to launch in Edinburgh this year.

Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, Philly's is on Lochside Place in Edinburgh Park.

It's a twenty minute tram ride from the city centre although I suspect that much of its custom will come from workers in the many nearby offices.

Eager beavers could be on the doorstep waiting for Philly's to open for breakfast at 8am.

Before heading to work, you could fit in a granola bowl or rock the full Scottish cooked breakfast.

Local suppliers

Philly's likes to support Scottish businesses and source all their produce from local suppliers.

The main menu is a crowd-pleaser. Burgers and pizza rub shoulders with sharing platters, fish 'n' chips and nachos.

If you are looking for something a little more off the beaten track, they also serve braised pork belly which comes with house baked beans, an apple compote and a ham hock bon bon.

Another suggestion would be the seasonal gado (pictured) - Indonesia's take on a stir fry.

Naturally, there are veggie and vegan options throughout the menus.

Lots of Scottish gins

The drinks list is very strong on gin with Scotland's many brands getting a good show.

If you prefer an after work cocktail, Philly's list range from classic Old Fashioneds and Mojitos to racy concoctions such as the Yakuza Cartel - a powerful blend of Midori, Cazcabel, apple, lime, sugar and soda.

If you really want to chill at Philly's then you should swing by their hanging garden area which is fitted with hanging seats and beanbags.

Dogs are welcome if you happen to have a four-legged friend in tow.

Launching a new restaurant and bar at a time of year when most people want nothing more than to shelter under the duvet shows a certain amount of grit.

Philly's - we salute you and wish you every success.
