Chinese New Year gets the party started

The Chinese New Year celebrations are underway and it's the year of the pig. Chopsticks ready?

Being born in the year of the pig might not sound the most flattering of star signs but, in Chinese culture, pigs are associated with wealth, entertaining and generosity.

As you might expect, restaurateurs in Glasgow and Edinburgh have devised a number of fun wheezes to mark the occasion.

At The Printing Press Bar and Kitchen on Edinburgh's George Street, the mixologists have come up with a Lucky Lychee cocktail. Main pic above.

With ingredients that include Absolut Citron vodka, lychee liqueur, orange juice and Maraschino cherries, it is practically a health drink and each one comes with a handmade fortune cookie.

Meanwhile on Thursday 7th February, The SKYbar at DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre Hotel is celebrating the year of the pig with a porcine-themed party.

The rooftop views in the bar are incredible. And if you fancy a bite to eat before or after visiting the SKYBar then the hotel's Bread Street Brasserie can be booked via 5pm Dining.

Four course feast in Glasgow

Zapping over to Glasgow, chefs Jimmy Lee and Julie Lin have teamed up to organise a four course feast at SWG3 to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Taking place on Thursday 7th February, tickets are £35 per person.

You can see the full menu here but we don't half fancy the pork and prawn jiaozi dumplings with black vinegar and chilli bean oil.

Jimmy and Julie are perhaps best known for fronting the Hot Woks show on STV but their restaurants also have strong followings.

There are lots of people who are big fans of the Malaysian food at Julie's Kopitiam in the Southside.

Jimmy's Lychee Oriental restaurant on Mitchell Street is a big hit with 5pm users. More than 500 5pm customers have given it a combined score of 4.4/5.

Book in with 5pm Dining

Of course, you can also browse all of the Chinese restaurants on 5pm Dining as well as our pan-Asian options.

From Banana Leaf, a Malaysian Chinese restaurant on Byres Road, to Bar Soba on Edinburgh's Hanover Street, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the year of the pig.
