A fine Catch

Two Glasgow chippies have been nominated for the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.

Both Catch in Giffnock and the West End are among seven Scottish chippies going forward to the next stage of the UK-wide competition.

Billed as 'posh modern day neighbourhood fish & chip shop and restaurants', the Catch restaurants have repositioned the chippie for the 21st century.

Of course they sell the classic fish supper but also offer options such as grilled haddock with a thermidor sauce, teriyaki glazed salmon and lobster to sit-in or takeaway.

Catch in Giffnock and the West End join five other Scottish chippies in the final 60 entrants of this year's Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, the flagship category in the 2020 National Fish & Chip Awards.

Organised by Seafish, the public body that supports the £10bn UK seafood industry, The National Fish & Chip Awards are the UK’s premier awards for fish and chips. The awards recognise outstanding businesses across the country that are serving incredible fish and chips and providing excellent customer service.

Shortlisted businesses have gone above and beyond to secure their place in the shortlist stage of the competition and showcase the nation’s favourite takeaway dish.

Sustainable sourcing

The criteria considered to make the shortlist include excellence in the sustainable sourcing of key ingredients and the creation of  innovative menu options for those with allergies and dietary requirements.

Fish and chips is the healthiest of the traditional takeaways providing an excellent source of protein, and many essential vitamins and minerals.

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive Officer at Seafish, said: 'Every summer we look forward to starting our search for the UK’s best fish and chip shop and this award showcases the best in the business. Shops have been entering the competition since May and these Top 60 takeaways have demonstrated real commitment to quality in all areas and worked tirelessly to earn their place on this list. I would recommend a visit to them all!'

The winner of the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 32nd anniversary ceremony in London on 23 January 2020.

Celebrating 32 years of success, The National Fish & Chip Awards have continuously grown in scale and stature since their formation in 1988, and are now recognised as one of the most prominent and respected seafood industry events in the UK.

They celebrate the British tradition of fish and chips, showcasing the best talent, quality and choice offered by fish and chip businesses through fifteen different award categories.
