5pm blog staff: not known for good looks

Not all of us need make-up or a costume to get a fright when near a mirror but, for those who want to go ghoul for Halloween, there is plenty of spookiness on offer this weekend.

We’ve already told you about the Day of the Dead feast at Stravaigin so we will skip to events at the Metropolitain in the Merchant City.

On Friday night, they are launching their new cocktail list and, the evening after, they are hosting an eight till late Halloween party.

Friday night festivities include free cocktail sampling, with entertainment from fire poi dancers, hula, DJs, live music and a spectacular ribbon dancer while the Metropolitan Halloween party on Saturday 29th October will feature a themed bar, fancy dress, DJs, live music, percussion, prizes and themed promotional cocktails.

Entry is free with revellers set to party from 8pm till 3am.

The Ghost of Towser the Mouser

Alternatively, Scotland’s oldest working distillery is holding a spooktacular ghost tour in the company of the Glasgow Paranormal Investigators (GPI).

The Famous Grouse Experience, which dates back to 1775, was investigated by the GPI in 2010. On visiting the distillery, the GPI’s medium apparently encountered several signs of paranormal activity including the presence of Karen Marshall, a suspected ex-employee who was dressed in 1970’s style clothing, a spirit called Gerry who created a measurable electric discharge and a cat.

Towser: hates meeces to pieces

Some think that the cat could in fact be Towser, the distillery’s resident feline for 24 years who died in 1987. Towser was famous in her own right and made it into the Guinness Book of Records for being the best mouser, catching 28,899 mice in her lifetime.

The Famous Grouse Experience will be open between 8pm and 11.30pm on Saturday 29th October for an exclusive tour with the GPI’s. Tickets are £25pp and include two drams and a tour of the distillery. Numbers are limited and pre booked tickets are required.

Phantom Afternoon Tea at Palm Court

We also liked the sound of the Halloween afternoon tea in the Palm Court at Edinburgh’s Balmoral. The spectral menu includes pumpkin meringue tarts, crunchy candy toffee apples or pistachio witches’ fingers before moving onto savoury fresh and smoked salmon on black bread.

Halloween Afternoon Tea will cost £23 per person and will be served from 1.30pm to 5.30pm from Friday 28th to Monday 31st October.
